Albertsons Companies, Inc. – Albertsons Companies Invests in Community Health with Pharmacy Improvements to Support Full Access to Immunization

Improvements to pharmacy planning and care will support co-administration of flu vaccine and new reformulated COVID-19 reminders at more than 1,700 pharmacies


Albertsons Companies today announced investments in technology, vaccine inventory and patient services to increase access to vaccination and personalized care at more than 1,700 pharmacies. Pharmacy teams at Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s, Acme, Tom Thumb, Randalls, United Supermarkets, Pavilions, Star Market, Haggen, Carrs and more are now administering flu shots, as well as the FDA and CDC cleared Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna bivalent COVID-19 boosters.

“Our pharmacy teams are partners in community health, and preparations for this year’s cold and flu season underscore an unwavering commitment to the well-being of our customers,” said Omer Gajial, Chief Digital Officer. and executive vice president of health at Albertsons Cos. “We have administered nearly 14 million COVID-19 vaccines to patients across the country, and we are enhancing the experience this year with specialized planning tools and pharmaceutical care. We know that vaccines are one of the better ways to keep families healthy this winter, and these enhancements are designed to make it easy for everyone to get the right shots in one appointment.

Pharmacy improvements and incentives include:

One-stop-shop for vaccinations:

  • Flu season: The quadrivalent influenza vaccine, Flublok and Fluzone HD are available. The flu vaccine is free with most insurers.
  • Bivalent COVID-19 vaccines: Reformulated boosters from Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech target both the original virus and the omicron BA.4 and BA.5 variants. Vaccines, as well as antigen tests, are available free of charge based on eligibility.
  • COVID-19 therapy: Some pharmacies administer Evusheld, a combination of long-acting monoclonal antibodies authorized for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 in certain high-risk individuals. Providers can consult the HHS COVID-19 Therapeutics Locator to locate an Albertsons pharmacy offering Evusheld. Evusheld is provided free of charge by the federal government. Some insurance plans will cover administration costs, including Medicare Part B.
  • Other key immunizations: Pharmacists may co-administer additional vaccines at each appointment, includingshingles, pneumonia, tetanus and HPV.

Schedule several vaccinations:

  • Appointment : Customers can now book appointments for up to five vaccinations together using the company’s online scheduler, available on the grocer’s app or website. The planner is also able to sort and recommend relevant vaccines by age.

Access to care 7 days a week:

  • Reception without appointment: Most Albertsons Cos.’ pharmacies offer convenient evening and weekend hours and will be staffed to accommodate short wait times and “walk-in” appointments.
  • Free consultations: Pharmacists are available to discuss clinical issues to help customers make informed health care decisions and will offer immunization history consultations and recommend co-administrations to update major immunizations.
  • Walk-in clinics: Vaccines can be administered from the comfort and convenience of patient cars at participating pharmacies.

Mobile vaccination clinics:

  • Remote services: Local pharmacists from Albertsons Cos. are available to set up and staff vaccination clinics in schools, nursing homes, businesses and other organizations to help ensure that students, residents and employees have access to these vaccinations.

Grocery discounts:

  • savings incentive: For each vaccination received at an Albertsons Cos.’ pharmacy, recipients will receive a coupon for 10% off their next grocery purchase up to $200 and access to a free digital vaccine record.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) currently recommends that COVID-19 vaccines be given during the same visit with other vaccines, including the flu shot, for eligible individuals. Flu vaccinations are available for children as young as 6 months of age, where permitted by state law. Currently, the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine and booster can be given to patients as young as 12, while Moderna COVID-19 doses are available for patients 18 and older. An adult must sign a consent and waiver form for minor patients receiving vaccines.
